KOLKATA: Following the Garden Reach building collapse, the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has planned to inspect its lands in areas off the EM Bypass on weekly basis to check building of illegal structures, said an official. It will send reports to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to take necessary action, in case any unauthorized construction is found.

KMDA owns several plots in areas like Patuli, Baisnabghata, Kasba, Rajdanga and adjacent to the Ruby crossing, besides in the east Kolkata area. The KMDA had earlier lodged about 45 FIRs against illegal building constructions on its plots and demolished about four to five of those structures with the help of police.

“Earlier, the KMC was informed about eight to ten illegal structures and a few of them were demolished by KMDA,” said an official.

The authorities were setting up boundary walls on all its plots to check encroachments. KMDA had also started the process to mutate all their land to prevent illegal building plan sanction.

Last year, following instructions, the BLRO (South) authorities had put up notice boards on nearly 800 plots off EM Bypass mentioning that those belonged to the govt.

The state govt had last year set up a high-level panel under the chief secretary to come out with a report of all vacant govt land off EM Bypass.
