MANGALURU: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) will soon appoint a consultant for the proposed 3D digital twin drone survey to be conducted in the city.

The purpose of the drone survey is to create a comprehensive databank of the city that will assist the revenue, engineering, health, town planning, and other wings of the city corporation. Furthermore, the geographic information system (GIS)-based decision support system (DSS) will help the MCC improve basic facilities, provide ease of life to people, and increase the revenue of the city corporation.

Premanand Shetty, the chief whip of the MCC council, told TOI that the implementation of the GIS-based DSS will not only enhance the transparency in administration, but also make the overall response of the city corporation more efficient. “It will help in presenting a better administration with the participation of all departments. The survey is aimed at preparing a 3D base map of the city corporation and surrounding regions. The database creation will help in the increase of revenue and better coordination among departments as well as ensure efficient disaster management. The council has already referred the proposal to the MCC standing committee on finance for a detailed discussion and report. Once the standing committee finalises the proposal, an agenda will be discussed in the next council meeting,” Shetty said.

“The survey will also assist in the creation of a web-based application of a 3D reality mesh model that will be helpful for property tax collection, flood monitoring, and land use management. The scope of the proposal also includes the accumulation of data through a mobile mapping system based on Lidar and 360-degree street panoramic imaging. A drone survey was conducted earlier by the city corporation through the Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) in 2022, and it had covered 16 wards,” he said.

Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur said the survey will provide a comprehensive picture of the city corporation in 3D format. “A decision to commence the survey will be taken as soon as possible,” he added.
