GURUGRAM: Groundwork for a new metro line between Millennium City Centre and Cyber City is set to begin soon as the project’s design consultant will finalise the route alignment for the corridor and pinpoint the exact location for all 27 stations on it.

Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) officials said on Tuesday that Systra India, appointed the detailed design consultant (DDC) for the project, will carry out a survey. It will take two to three months to complete.

The agency will use GPS technology to map the exact location of metro stations and their infrastructure. This includes even the entry and exit gates of each station.

Additionally, officials said, a 500m buffer zone along the metro corridor’s route and intersecting roads will be surveyed to facilitate smooth intermodal transfers.

GMRL managing director Chandra Shekhar Khare last week wrote to local authorities, including GMDA, MCG, NHAI, and traffic police, requesting their assistance in execution of the work.

A senior GMRL official said that this survey was crucial because the last time this exercise was carried out was five years ago and the city has seen several changes since then.

“This survey is important for finalising the metro’s alignment and stations, and ensuring the infrastructure integrates seamlessly with the city’s existing framework. Under this, we will pinpoint the exact locations of stations, entry and exit points, and other infrastructure elements,” he said.

GMRL is expected to appoint a general consultant for the project. The agency will be responsible for procurement, construction, management, testing and commissioning of the new metro line.

Beginning at Millennium City, the new metro line will cross Old Gurgaon before making a loop and ending at Cyber City. This 28.8km corridor with 27 elevated metro stations has a budget of Rs 5,452 crore.

It will be the first metro extension project to come up in the city in seven years. Public transportation in Gurgaon has barely seen any change even though the city’s population and reputation as a hub of corporates and IT firms has rapidly grown over the years. Currently, the city has just 17 km of metro line — 5.3 km of the Delhi Metro’s yellow line, and 11.7 km of Rapid Metro. The last expansion was in 2017, when the Rapid Metro, which connects Cyber City and almost the entire length of Golf Course Road, was opened to commuters in its entirety.

The Union Cabinet in June 2023 approved the Millennium City-Cyber City line, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the corridor in February this year.
