AIZAWL: Mizoram power & electricity minister Rodingliana Wednesday unveiled a fresh scheme under the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SGMBY), offering households the option to install rooftop solar systems. The initiative aims to help residents reduce their electricity expenses.
During a press conference in Aizawl, Rodingliana detailed how the Centre has been offering subsidies for rooftop solar installations to enable domestic power generation through solar energy. The programme targets one crore households nationwide, with the central govt providing subsidised solar systems.
“This initiative is expected to minimise electricity expenses and help consumers achieve energy self-sufficiency,” he said. He noted that the programme seeks to decrease dependency on external power sources while encouraging sustainable practices among citizens.
The minister clarified that the scheme is exclusively available to Indian citizens who are current electricity consumers with good payment records. It applies only to private residential properties, excluding govt and institutional buildings. Applicants must ensure their details correspond with their electricity bill information.
Rodingliana stated that Mizoram has engaged 12 authorised vendors collaborating with the state govt for rooftop solar installation. Financial support is available through various national banks, including local institutions such as SBI and MRB for Mizoram inhabitants.
Installation costs under the scheme are set at Rs 12,000 within Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) boundaries and Rs 18,000 for areas 200 km beyond AMC limits. Currently, 2,990 households have registered for the programme, with 557 applications receiving approval.
For solar systems up to 10 kilowatts, interested consumers must first register on the state portal, pmsuryaghar.mizoram.gov.in, followed by registration on pmsuryaghar.gov.in. After online approval, consumers can select from government-approved vendors who will provide installation and five-year maintenance services.
