MOHALI: The municipal corporation (MC) has issued notices to 80 building owners suspected of illegal construction, requiring them to furnish requisite clearances and no objection certificates (NOCs).

Notices were issued by the MC commissioner, asking the owners to produce documents within 15 days or face the resumption of plots or demolition of unauthorised structures. The move comes in the wake of Sohana building collapse.

Mohali mayor Amarjeet Singh Sidhu, alias Jeeti Sidhu, stated, “The MC survey revealed that 97 buildings were constructed as high-rises in violation of regulations. The notices have been sent to 80 building owners for producing valid permissions and documents supporting the construction with MC in 15 days or face demolition. The notices have been sent from the MC commissioner to such visible violators.”

Recently, regarding unauthorised shops in villages under the MC, mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu convened an emergency meeting with MC commissioner T Benith, building branch officials, and fire department officials, after which the notices were issued.

The mayor clarified that whilst only three-storey buildings are sanctioned in the villages, many have constructed multi-storey buildings in violation of the regulations. He indicated that unauthorised buildings exist both inside and outside the designated red zones in these villages, and action will be undertaken against them.

He also said the building branch reported during the meeting that a survey is ongoing in all Mohali villages, and construction of buildings without approved plans has ceased. The MC’s engineering department is assessing the structural integrity of all buildings within the village red zones, and appropriate action will be taken against structurally compromised buildings based on the report.

If not addressed, the MC will proceed independently, and all expenses will be recovered from the building owners. He emphasised that those violating the regulations will not be spared.
