MYSURU: The e-khata drive by Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) boosted revenue by Rs 1.7 crore in Dec compared to Nov. Around 2,500 applicants cleared property tax and water cess dues to obtain digitally processed khatas.

MCC officials view the initiative as a major success in revenue recovery. MCC launched this drive a fortnight ago. To receive e-khatas, applicants must clear all their pending property tax and water cess dues from the last five years. This condition enabled MCC to recover its water cess and property tax dues, the two major sources of its income.

MCC registered a tax collection of Rs 9.3 crore during Dec, with an increase of Rs 1.7 crore compared to November, before the launch of the drive. MCC set a target of property tax of Rs 199 crore, water cess of Rs 80 crore, and pending dues of Rs 180 crore from its defaulters this year.

Usually, MCC registers a record of property tax collection during the initial two months of the fiscal year, between April and May, to benefit from a 5% tax rebate announced by the govt. For the first time, MCC registered a record tax collection of Rs 9.3 crore during Dec following the launch of the e-khata drive.

Speaking to TOI, MCC deputy commissioner (revenue) Somashekhar Jigani said the e-khata drive received a good response from property owners. The conditions applied for issuance helped MCC recover pending property tax and water cess dues, resulting in an increase in its revenue, he said.

MCC zonal commissioner D Nagesh said the drive, initiated in its zone as per the directions of the MCC commissioner, received a good response. His officials also provided wide publicity to this drive.

“I obtained my e-khata after clearing all property tax and water cess dues pending from the last five years,” Chiranjivi, a resident of Nazarbad and one of the applicants for the e-khata told TOI.
