NASHIK: With less than a month left for the current financial year to end, the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has started serving notices to the property tax defaulters.

So far, notices have been issued to over 2,000 defaulters, asking them to clear their tax dues within 15 days. The NMC has over 1.5 lakh property tax defaulters with dues over Rs 250 crore.

The civic body has so far collected Rs237 crore towards property tax as against the target of Rs250 crore set for the current financial year (2024-25). The NMC has a total of 5.6 lakh properties registered with the property tax department.

In order to collect maximum dues and meet the target, the civic administration had introduced an amnesty scheme for the defaulters between Oct 1 and Jan 31, giving up to 95% rebate on the penalty amount for those who cleared their dues.

Over 60,000 defaulters took advantage of the scheme which resulted in a waiver of Rs 30 crore in penalties on their outstanding dues. The NMC managed to collect around Rs 60 crore in the four months when the amnesty scheme was active. However, a majority of the defaulters chose not to clear their dues.

The civic administration, therefore, decided to serve notices for recovery of the tax. “We have so far served notices to around 2,000 defaulters. We will continue to serve notices to all the defaulters. A final notice will be sent if they fail to clear their dues. Lastly, we will start issuing warrants to those who fail to pay the tax dues even after the final notice. They will be given an ultimatum of 21 days to make the payment or their properties will be confiscated by the civic body,” the official said.
