NASHIK: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) collected Rs 27 crore through its amnesty scheme during Oct and Nov this year.
The scheme attracted approximately 30,000 property tax defaulters, which resulted in the waiver of Rs 13 crore in penalties on their outstanding dues. The total property tax arrears stand at roughly Rs 450 crore, which includes Rs 200 crore in accumulated penalties.
NMC imposes a monthly penalty of 2% on unpaid property taxes and additional charges for notices and warrants issued to defaulters. Under the current amnesty scheme, defaulters can receive up to a 95% penalty waiver if they settle their dues between Oct 1 and Nov 30. The scheme offers an 85% penalty waiver for payments made in Dec this year, while those paying in Jan next year can benefit from a 75% reduction.
NMC officials said they received a good response from the defaulters in the first two months. The scheme will be in effect for the next two months, Dec and Jan.
“We are expecting more defaulters to get the benefit, then we will be able to mop up Rs 30 crore more from the property tax defaulters during the next two months,” said NMC officials.
In 2021, the civic body introduced the same scheme for the property tax defaulters for two months (Oct-Nov). Howeverm it received poor response as it collected only Rs 14.86 crore. Around 17,560 tax defaulters availed the scheme, which got then a rebate of Rs 56.33 lakh in penalty during the period.
NMC has set property tax collection target of Rs 250 crore for the current financial year. So far, it has collected over Rs 150 crore in property tax.
