NEW DELHI: For daily collection, transportation and dumping of construction and demolition (C&D) waste from its areas, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has decided to engage an agency for five years and sanctioned a budget of Rs 52.8 crore for the project.

Every day, 50-100 metric tonne C&D waste is generated in NDMC areas, and existing arrangements are inadequate to handle it. “Being a municipal body, NDMC is responsible for the removal of C&D waste, including all materials generated as waste either during construction or repair or re-modelling or demolition of any civil structure,” said NDMC vice-chairman Satish Upadhyay. For collection, transportation and dumping of this waste in an organised manner, “we aim to engage an agency for five years, extendable by two years on the basis of performance”, he added.

The previous contract for the removal of C&D waste from the NDMC areas, which was running for the past seven years, expired on Jan 17, and a new agency will have to be hired to continue the removal of waste as per Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules 2016, the council stated. According to SWM norms, C&D waste in large quantities should be directly sent to a recycling plant for disposal in a scientific manner.

“The hired agency will be responsible for collecting waste from roads, back lanes, parks, etc. and sending it to the recycling plants. It will operate for at least five years. In Tuesday’s meeting, we have given the expenditure sanction for the proposal,”said Upadhyay.

Delhi daily generates 6,000 tonne C&D waste, including the NDMC waste, and to process them, Municipal Corporation of Delhi has set up four plants with a total handling capacity of 5,000 tonne per day. While the Burari plant can handle 2,000 tonne per day, the facilities at Bakkarwala, Rani Khera and Shastri Park have the capacity of managing 1,000 tonne waste each. For the convenience of common people, around 150 locations have been identified across the city where they can dump waste insmall quantities.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation also runs a recycling plant of 150 tonne-per-day capacity at Mundka to process its own C&D waste.
