HYDERABAD: A Non-Resident Indian (NRI) from Nigeria lost 3.6 crore after falling prey to promises by a real estate firm of providing him land in Kondapur. A popular Tollywood hero was the brand ambassador of this firm. The accused, after collecting the money, promised to get the property registered and then conned the businessman by making him wait at the sub-registrar’s office and failing to turn up.
The victim approached Cyberabad police and lodged a criminal case against the proprietor of the real estate company. The complainant, when he was in India in 2021, was in search of a piece of land with potential for appreciation. After seeing social media advertisements in which the hero was used for promotion, the complainant got in touch with company representatives who showed different ventures in Ranga Reddy district and its surrounding areas.
He decided to buy 2,100 sq yards in Kokapet and paid 3.6 crore. It was agreed that the registration could be done within a year. Later, the complainant came to know that the plots which were sold to him were registered in some other customers’ names.
When the complainant questioned the proprietor, the latter assured him that he would convince the two customers to cancel their sale deeds and pave the way for registering the promised plot to the complainant. He also assured that registration would be done at the sub-registrar office after clearing the arrears.
The victim cleared the pending money and he was shown the sale deeds to be registered in his name. “He was asked to come to the SRO’s office to complete the remaining formalities. As agreed, he went to the SRO hoping that registration would be done but the proprietor did not turn up,” Cyberabad police said. When the victim made numerous attempts to reach the accused, the accused evaded meeting him. Police registered a criminal case on the charge of conspiracy, cheating, and breach of trust.
