NEW DELHI: The government has sanctioned little over six lakh houses to 29 states and UTs under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban’s second phase, Union housing and urban affairs minister Manohar Lal Khattar said on Tuesday. While a maximum of 1.1 lakh houses have been sanctioned for Uttar Pradesh, followed by Maharashtra (92,000), West Bengal (55,000) and 50,000 each for Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. Smaller states and UTs such as Goa, Sikkim and Andaman & Nicobar Islands have got sanctions for 500 units each.

PMAY (U) 2.0 was approved by the Union Cabinet on Aug 9 and it was officially launched on Sept 17.

Speaking to reporters on the progress of the ministry’s flagship programmes, Khattar said the number of houses to be sanctioned for each state and UT for the next five years will be announced after March. These will be based on state-level surveys. He added that such a clear announcement will help applicants know in which year their application will be sanctioned.

The minister said there will also be a similar survey to assess the need for rental housing for working women, industrial workers, migrants and other eligible beneficiaries. PMAY(U) 2.0 has included rental housing as a major component to meet the growing requirement of accommodation in urban areas.
