PM hands over 15,000 homes under largest affordable housing project, ET RealEstate

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday handed over 15,024 homes in Maharashtra‘s Solapur district to beneficiaries from economically weaker sections including unorganised workers, textile workers, beedi workers, construction workers, ragpickers and garment workers.

This is the world’s largest affordable housing project being executed under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U).

The project being built on an area of around 350 acres, has been divided into two phases and total 30,000 flats will be constructed across 833 buildings with ground plus two floors structure.

Notably, nearly 100% of these houses will have the ownership title in the name of leading women in the families from economically vulnerable backgrounds working in various unorganised sectors These 300-sq-ft houses have been allotted to families with an annual income of less than Rs 3 lakh.

The state government’s housing body Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) as the state level nodal agency for PMAY, has been monitoring the project.

Each dwelling unit costs Rs 6.10 lakh, including infrastructure, priced at Rs 5,00,000, with a carpet area 300 sq ft.

The government had launched the PMAY mission in June 2015 with an objective to provide housing for all. This flagship program has proved to be a major game changer in the housing sector.

Under this scheme, the government provides central assistance to the implementing agencies through states and Union Territories (UTs) and Central Nodal Agencies (CNAs) for providing houses to all eligible families and beneficiaries.

Over the last few years, the government has been focusing on affordable housing as the urbanisation and growing economic activities have led to the challenges associated with affordable housing in urban areas.

The government has been making consistent efforts in the form of monetary allocations, housing programs and policies to overcome the challenges associated with housing for economically weaker sections.
