MOHALI: Hanging fire for the past four years, the issue of inclusion of seven villages in municipal limits has made a comeback. The proposal was passed by the Mohali MC house in 2021. Now as the panchayat elections are approaching, the matter has been raised once again.

Before the panchayat elections, the Punjab government must decide on the resolution passed by the Mohali municipal corporation to include some villages in the corporation area, said deputy mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi.

In this regard, the Deputy Mayor has writen a letter to the chief minister and top officials of the Punjab government to take decision on inclusion of some villages and other areas in Mohali corporation as passed by the house in 2021.

Bedi said, “Before the 2022 elections, a resolution was passed in the Mohali municipal corporation meeting in 2021 to increase the area of the Mohali civic body. Villages like Balongi, Bad Majra, Baliali, Ballo Majra, Mauli Baidwan were included in Mohali MC in this resolution on the demand of residents of the villages for getting city-like facilities.”

The deputy mayor said the area of Mauli Baidwan village in Sector 80 or TDI City has been added in the extended boundary of the Mohali municipal corporation in this resolution. The village land from different areas is also included in passed resolution of the Mohali MC.

Bedi cautioned that if the panchayat elections are held without deciding on the above resolution, then many legal pitfalls may arise. He said as a deputy mayor as well as being an aware citizen, he is bringing this important matter to the attention of the chief minister and officials of the Punjab Government so that the government takes a timely decision to provide urban facilities to the residents of these villages, fulfilling the hopes of the people of these villages with the inclusion of this area in the municipal corporation to end this dispute.

Bedi said if the government fails to take a call on this issue before the panchayat elections, it will lead to a lot of confusion and chaos. “The elected representatives of these villages will face uncertainty about their tenure and powers. It will also lead to wastage of resources and time for conducting elections in these villages if they are later included in the MC limits,” he said.

Bedi has urged the CM to prioritize this matter and take a swift decision in the interest of the residents of these villages. The inclusion of these villages in the MC limits will ensure planned development, better infrastructure, and improved quality of life for the residents, he added.
