PUNE: The state registration department’s proposal to modernise 100 sub-registrar offices is expected to be cleared by the new revenue minister, senior officials from the property registration department told TOI on Saturday.

The proposal was put forth after multiple complaints from citizens about cramped spaces and inadequate facilities at property registration offices.

The proposal, which marks the second phase of the department’s infrastructure upgrade initiative, will be presented to the revenue minister for approval soon. This follows the successful renovation of some offices completed in the first phase early this year.

“The renovation includes new furniture, fixtures, and interior improvements to enhance the working environment for staff and citizens visiting these offices,” a senior department official told TOI.

The state currently operates 516 sub-registrar offices, with the modernisation programme being implemented in phases.

The plan to refurbish 100 offices was issued through a govt resolution (GR) a day before the state assembly elections were announced on Oct 14. The state govt was to allocate Rs10 crore for the projects for the renovation of almost two to three offices in every district in the state, the official added.

However, since the proposal was put up just before the state polls, it would have to be put up again before the new revenue minister.

Activists said most of the offices are in cramped places, forcing citizens to queue up outside the offices for long hours.

“While renovation may be of help, there is a need for new offices,” S Joshi, an activist, said, adding that the three main city registration offices need urgent addressal as there is always a huge rush and there is no seating arrangement.
