JAIPUR: The water resources department (WRD) has made rainwater harvesting systems mandatory for all new residential and commercial buildings in the state.
As per govt notification, which comes into effect immediately, the PHED will not sanction drinking water connections to those who do not comply with the order.
The move is aimed at augmenting groundwater levels in the arid state. In its Aug 5 notification, the department said that upcoming residential buildings (measuring 225 square metres or more) and commercial buildings (measuring 500 square metres or more) must have water harvesting facilities.
Owners will have to build structures
“Rainwater recharge structures will have to be constructed by owners or residents. As per the circular, until they build these structures, the municipal corporation or council will not grant NOCs for water connections. Legal action can be initiated against non-compliant building owners, which may range from fines to imprisonment,” said WRD secretary Samit Sharma.
Officials of the water resources department said provisions of the Environmental Protection Building Regulations 2020 stipulate construction of water harvesting units and structures in setback areas of plots measuring 225 square metres or more.
In industrial areas, the construction of rainwater recharge structures is obligatory for plots measuring 500 square metres or more, as per RIICO Building Regulation 2021.
“New order empowers the state govt to take steps against errant builders, owners, or residents. We are hopeful that it will ensure construction of rainwater harvesting infrastructure,” a senior water resources department official said.
