RANCHI: Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) launched a major anti-encroachment drive in Harmu housing colony on Sunday, following the Jharkhand High Court’s November 14 directive. The operation targeted unauthorized structures, particularly illegal meat and fish shops, on public roads near local temples.

Emphasizing the mandatory nature of the court order, city manager Ambuj Singh, stated, “We are obligated to remove all illegal encroachments obstructing public spaces. This drive aims to restore community areas and ensure unhindered traffic flow.”

The operation concentrated on areas surrounding the Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple and Shri Panch Temple, where numerous unauthorized structures had emerged. A special enforcement team, backed by local and female police personnel, was deployed to maintain order.

“We strictly followed the court’s order and took necessary precautions to avoid conflicts. Our team, supported by law enforcement, ensured a peaceful process,” Singh added.

RMC had issued prior notifications on Saturday, giving encroachers 24 hours to voluntarily remove their structures. “Of the hundreds of stalls present, about 20 vendors complied with the notice, while others protested against the drive,” Singh said.

To accommodate the displaced vendors, the housing board has allocated space at Janta Bazaar in Harmu, behind the Panchmukhi temple.

The drive reflects RMC’s commitment to implementing court orders and maintaining public spaces, while also providing alternative arrangements for affected vendors. The operation marks a significant step toward urban space management and regulatory compliance in Ranchi.
