The Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana (VAMBAY) housing complex built for the urban poor at Chiroundi is in a dilapidated condition, threatening the future of 864 families residing in it since 2009.

The housing facility, built from 2004-08, has collapsed roofs, missing windows, and severely damaged floors, the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) is in talks with the directorate of municipal administration and the urban development and housing department regarding alternative arrangements for residents.

However, residents opposed the relocation plan and urged authorities to renovate the existing structure instead of demolishing it. Most are daily wagers, who were relocated from different slums of Ranchi.

Resident Tahira Khatun said, “RMC officials recently conducted a survey of ownership papers. Though we haven’t received any eviction notice yet, we have learned about the planned relocation. We oppose this move as it could jeopardise our livelihoods. We want the authorities to repair our homes.”

Echoing his views, Shahidur Nisa, said, “No repairs have been undertaken since we moved in. Water leaks through the roofs in monsoon, forcing us to stay awake throughout the night. Our previous relocation cost us our livelihoods.”

Another dweller of the complex, Amar Ram, said, “Overflowing septic tanks have led to unhygienic conditions across the premises.”

RMC city manager Mrinal Kumar said, “Several buildings are damaged and require reconstruction. We’re planning to relocate residents temporarily while we demolish and rebuild the structures. However, the relocation site hasn’t been finalized yet. The project might be converted under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, with recommendations to accommodate existing residents in the new structure.”
