KOLKATA: Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has extended the last date for tax payers to pay their dues online to April 7 after which the authorities will stop online or offline collection of property tax for financial year 2023-24. The authorities will also start imposing a 10% penalty and 10% interest payable against arrear property tax as it would stand till March 31.
They also plan to start collecting property tax in wards 27, 28, 35 and 36, covering Mahisbathan, Polenite, Nayapatti and vast bheri areas off EM Bypass, where residents are still paying ‘khajna’ or land revenue to the local panchayat or BLRO. The system will come in effect from April 1.
The civic authorities on its website have put up a notice, stating that online payment of property tax will be stopped on April 7 while tax collection through cash, cheque or demand draft will stop from April 6 onwards for the authorities to generate the property tax demand notice for 2024-25. The date for resumption of property tax collection through both online and offline mode for this financial year — 2024-25 — will be intimated by the civic authorities soon.
Officials said that they would soon start generating and sending tax demand notices for 2024-25 fiscal. The authorities have set a target to collect Rs 40 crore from property tax this financial year.
BMC has increased collection of property tax over the last few years. The authorities had collected around Rs 27.8 crore in the last financial year of 2022-23. Also, since introducing e-mutation process of properties for people residing in BMC wards 1 to 26, covering Rajarhat-Gopalpur area, the civic body has increased the collection of mutation fees.
The officials plan to collect Rs 7 crore from mutation fee processing charges this fiscal.
