NASHIK: Divisional commissioner Radhakrishna Game on Saturday stressed on the need for pursuing environmentally sustainable development in rapidly growing semi-urban areas in Nashik, Ahmednagar, Dhule, Jalgaon and Nandurbar districts.

Addressing an Urban Development Summit, Game said stress should be laid on water, waste management and sanitation so that these towns do not face the problems encountered by mega cities.

“Being the most urbanised state, Maharashtra will face more challenges regarding water and sanitation issues. The situation in some of the peri-urban areas has already become critical. The onus of sustainable development lies on citizens and we need to take very harsh steps that can help prolong and prevent the change in climatic conditions for a better future for each one of us,” said Game.

The divisional commissioner, who was earlier the Nashik Municipal Corporation commissioner, pointed out that public participation was key to success of the sustainable development and cited how good schemes being implemented in Nashik city also failed due to lack of participation.

“The NMC had started the rent a bicycle programme on PPP-basis enabling people to use healthier modes of transport from one point to another point without caring for parking of the bicycle. First the bicycles were stolen by anti-social elements. But after they were fitted with the GPS, people began destroying the bicycles,” he said.

He also cited how due to public pressure the ‘smart parking’ project failed to take off despite all infrastructure being laid via PPP-basis.
