TRICHY: Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peramaippu, a federation of traders‘ organisation in the state has sought the Union govt to withdraw the 18% goods and service tax (GST) levied on the rent paid for commercial properties.
The federation, which conducted a general body meeting in Trichy on Tuesday, also urged the state govt to withdraw the 6% annual hike proposed in property tax and the trade licence fee collected from commercial properties.
At the meeting, traders passed 14 resolutions. They resolved to conduct a protest against the GST on rent in New Delhi next March. “Before making any changes in GST slabs, the govt should invite and consult the representatives of traders’ federation. The shortcomings during the implementation of GST between 2017 and 2022 should be amicably resolved,” Ve Govindarajalu, general secretary of the federation, said.
For the convenience of the public and traders, the federation sought the state govt to collect electricity usage charges monthly . It also passed resolutions against increased taxation on readymade clothing products and collection of a fee for solid waste collection by urban local bodies.
The federation decided to conduct its next state level conference at Maduranthakam near Chengalpattu on May 5, 2025.
