KOLKATA: Prodded by CM Mamata Banerjee, mayor Firhad Hakim on Tuesday asked KMC to offer occupancy certificates to the tenants of the dilapidated building at Madan Paul Lane, located close to Harish Chatterjee Street. Large parts of the façade of the building collapsed on Saturday night, prompting the CM to conduct an survey of the century-old building. She instructed KMC to arrange for a temporary shelter for the tenants and demolish the building to prevent any untoward events.

Hakim visited the spot on Tuesday and ordered his officials to make a spot assessment and measurements so that occupancy certificates could be issued at the earliest to the residents before starting the demolition process.

It is learnt that Hakim also advised 48 residents of the building to shift to a KMC primary school on Rupchand Mukherjee Road to enable the civic body to start the demolition.

Third-generation tenant, Vivek Shaw, who has been staying with his family and also runs a grocery shop on the same premises, said, “There is a prolonged tussle between the owners and a promoter that led to a delay in fresh construction at the site and aggravated the condition of the rickety building.”

The CM visited the spot, which is less than a kilometre from her Harish Chatterjee Street home, and spoke to the tenants. She asked her driver to stop at Madan Paul Lane on Monday around 8 pm on her way back home after a meeting with the governor. Mihir Kumar Jha, who also stays on the ground floor, said, “We are thankful to Didi for her intervention.”
