KOLKATA: Almost the entire land in New Town, earmarked for the Silicon Valley, had been allocated to IT companies, said chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday.

“We initially thought of setting up Silicon Valley on 100 acres. We revised the size and made provisions for 200 acres. Almost the entire land has been allocated to companies,” Banerjee said after the Budget was tabled. “Infosys had asked us for land. The IT hub will provide jobs to nearly 75,000 people,” The state had allotted 50 acres of land in New Town to Infosys.

Bengal Silicon Valley IT Hub, a state-of-the-art technology centre, is coming up at Action Area II in New Town. Letters of Intent have been issued to 38 companies and constructions have started for nine of them, including major industry players, such Reliance, Airtel Nxtra, ST Telemedia and NTT. This project was poised to cement Kolkata’s position as a key player in India’s IT landscape, state finance minister Chandrima Bhattacharya said in her Budget speech.

Bhattacharya said on the 50 acres of land that was allocated to Infosys adjacent to Bengal Silicon Valley, its campus had come up and operations began in 2024. During the construction phase, Infosys set up a 400-seat office at Mani Casadona, Sector-1, New Town, creating new opportunities for IT professionals in the region.

The state also celebrated the completion of several major IT park developments—100% completion for Kalyani IT Park (Phase II), BN-9 IT Park (Sector V), BN-4 IT Park (Sector V), and Rajarhat IT Park (Phase II).

Other projects, such as EMC Falta, have seen significant progress, with over 85% of civil and allied work completed.

Bengal now boasts 22 IT parks, one hardware park and two electronics manufacturing clusters (EMCs), with 18 operational parks across both tier-I and tier-II cities. The occupancy rate across all IT parks stood at 91.8%, as recorded till Dec 2024.
