AHMEDABAD: Six years ago, the housing projects department of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) issued a work order to a company called Sanghani Infrastructure India Pvt Ltd, to build 1,190 houses in the Thaltej area. The company did not begin on-site work for a long time despite repeated notices from the AMC.

The civic body has now decided to blacklist Sanghani Infrastructure India Pvt Ltd for five years, a proposal for which was presented at the housing committee meeting on Oct 16. Once this is approved by the committee, the contractor will be blacklisted for five years.

In the past, at least three contractors were blacklisted in Ahmedabad due to delays or not completing housing projects for the urban poor.

The AMC awards tenders to the lowest bidder, but these contractors often fail to start work, depriving the urban poor of housing in a timely manner.
