BENGALURU: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is all set to launch a new contactless, digital e-khata issuance system.

BBMP has already digitised all 21-lakh existing khatas.

As part of this process, BBMP staff will soon visit properties across the city to capture their GPS coordinates. This data will serve as a unique identity marker for each property, which is crucial for online delivery of e-khata services.

The GPS information is essential for accurate and secure issuance of e-khatas, which will be available on a new digital platform.

“A team comprising two officials will visit each ward and ensure e-khata is processed and GPS tagging is done. The project will take four-six months to complete. As of now, we have 240 employees — 120 are our own staffers and the rest are outsourced — to execute the job,” said Munish Moudgil, special commissioner (revenue), BBMP.

“Revenue officers (RO) already have a list of the houses and owners who have paid their property tax. So, when the ROs visit the properties, they will only geotag those to the already existing property tax IDs,” he explained.

“We will soon create a digital platform on which the owner will be able to upload the GPS location of the property online,” he added.

The ROs will also inquire with the neighbours about the owner’s identity to ensure a fool-proof verification process.

Property owners are being encouraged to cooperate with this initiative to ensure a smooth and efficient service delivery.

Moudgil told TOI, there are close to 26 lakh properties in the city, out of which, 21 lakh are declared. “The roughly 20% of owners who do not have a dedicated property tax ID yet may show up during this drive,” Moudgil added.

Emphasising the importance of this transition, Tushar Giri Nath, the chief commissioner of BBMP, said: “The new e-khata system will make property registration more accessible and efficient, aligning with our commitment to better serve Bengaluru’s residents.”
