JAIPUR: After almost one-and-a-half decades of discussions on paper, construction works for the Metro Line 2 Corridor from Sitapura to Vidhyadhar Nagar is finally poised to commence in mid-2025.
Officials from urban development and housing (UDH) department have indicated that the state govt has demonstrated interest in laying the foundation stone, considering the forthcoming civic polls in Nov.
UDH officials said that during a recent meeting with chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, the department received directives to accelerate works of all announced metro projects in the city. Subsequently, the timelines have been set.
“The state govt is enthusiastic to lay the foundation stone for Jaipur Metro Line 2 anytime between Aug 15 and Diwali. If everything proceeds according to schedule, this is quite feasible,” said an official. The initiative materialised after finance minister Diya Kumari allocated a fund of Rs 12,000 crore for the Line 2 during the state Budget last month.
Officials noted that the first proposal for Line 2 was conceptualised in 2011. While the initial scheme was to build the Sitapura-Ambabari corridor first, the govt subsequently opted to construct the Mansarovar-Sindhi Camp stretch (later extended till Badi Chaupar) ahead of the Line 2.
“Over the past 14 years, the Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC) Ltd has developed two detailed project reports (DPRs) and made at least three revisions to these reports for this initiative. Currently, JMRC is drafting another revised DPR for this section, while simultaneously preparing a separate DPR for the planned extension connecting Ambabari to Vidhyadhar Nagar. If the govt proceeds with the groundbreaking ceremony in 2025, it would mark the end of this 13-year period of anticipation,” remarked a metro official.
Confirming the development, a metro spokesperson said that following a meeting at the chief minister’s residence on March 11, the deadlines have been decided.
“It has been determined that JMRC would publish the DPRs for Line 2 by March 31. Additionally, JMRC shall execute tenders for civil works of Line 2 by Aug 15,” the spokesperson added.
