TRICHY: The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has yet to begin work on the detailed project report (DPR) for the Trichy metro proposal, despite completing a detailed feasibility report (DFR) over a year ago. While the DFR, submitted in August 2023, confirmed the viability of a metro system in Trichy, the project has not been prioritised by the state government.

CMRL sources said Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai metro projects are currently receiving priority.

Recent studies and inspections were conducted for metro proposals in Coimbatore and Madurai, but no significant progress has been made for Trichy. The estimated cost of the Trichy metro project stands at ₹10,917 crore.

“Implementing metro corridors in Trichy will not face major hurdles as there are no serious overlaps with existing flyovers or overbridges,” a senior CMRL official said. However, arranging funds for the project remains a major challenge. “The Trichy metro plan is yet to be prioritised or fast-tracked by the state government. For now, it is on hold,” the official added.

The DFR outlines two metro corridors spanning 45 km across Trichy city. CMRL’s sources said that Corridor 1 will be 19 km long connecting Samayapuram with Vayalur and will have 19 metro stations. Corridor 2 is proposed for 26 km linking Thuvakudi with Panjapur, featuring 26 metro stations.
