PANAJI: Goa police on Saturday decided to launch a drive on Oct 15 to prosecute landlords for unverified tenants. Goa police verified the credentials of over 20,000 tenants and house helpers for the safety and security of the citizens from Oct 1 to 9. So far, they verified the credentials of 70,000 people.

Director general of police (DGP) Alok Kumar said Goa police is committed to taking all possible steps to provide a safe and secure atmosphere to Goans and tourists who come here in large numbers. “The cumulative figure for both districts till Oct 9 this year is 70,000, of which 20,000 is between Oct 1 and 9,” Kumar said.

“We have seen cases where landlords have given their premises on rent to foreigners and have not submitted the requisite information, and such foreigners have been arrested for illegal activities. We appeal to all citizens to complete the necessary formalities in respect of their tenants, whether Indian or foreigner, and play their role in the security architecture of the state,” Kumar said.

The Goa Verification of Tenants Act covers persons who are either staying on rent or for other considerations. The act strengthens the process of collection and verification of tenants to obtain timely information from the security perspective and related matters.

Long queues are being witnessed at different police stations for the tenant verification drive launched by Goa police on the instruction of chief minister Pramod Sawant. Sawant said that in most of the rape and murder cases, it was found that migrants were involved.

Goa Police also launched a special drive to act against foreign nationals who have been overstaying in the state without proper documents. In the last three days, they booked three foreign nationals.
