CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR: The city police have started cracking down on property owners who fail to carry out the mandatory police verification of their tenants who are foreign national.

As part of the action, two home owners were booked by the Begumpura police station late on Tuesday.

A police officer said that during the verification process it was found that the home owners in both the cases gave their apartments to seven Sudan nationals each.

“Based on the complaint lodged by a constable from the special branch, the home owners have been booked under relevant sections of the Foreigners Act, 1946,” the officer added. The police action is the result of a recent incident wherein a Sudanese national residing in the city on student visa was booked on the complaint lodged by a teenager.

A case was registered with the City Chowk police station following which he was arrested. Deputy commissioner of police (headquarters) Shilwant Nandedkar said the decision to initiate a dedicated drive after a foreign national was caught violating the student visa norms.
