THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city corporation council has approved the draft master plan 2040 amidst a heated exchange between the ruling front and BJP councillors on Wednesday. For the time being, the corporation will not bring in the recommended regulations for the construction of multi-storied buildings according to the width of the roads.

This was one of the key recommendations in the draft master plan of the city corporation. It has been decided to apply the Kerala Municipality building rules for the construction of any type of building.

The draft plan recommends that only buildings with a maximum area of 1,000 square meters (10,770 square feet) should be constructed near a five-meter-wide road. It also recommended that only a 4,000 square meter building be constructed if there is a 7-meter-wide road in front and a 24,000-square-meter building near a 10-meter road.

After the final approval of the master plan, it has also been decided not to allow land type change in the protected areas. The council meeting approved the submission of the recommendations made regarding the draft master plan to the government.

The meeting began with the swearing-in ceremony of Panathura Baiju, who won from Vellar ward in the bye-election at the ward recently. An hour after discussing the by-election, the meeting turned chaotic after LDF councilor DR Anil presented an oral resolution.

Meanwhile, the council meeting also passed an oral resolution against the actions of BJP members for stopping the vehicle of deputy mayor PK Raju and trying to assault him during the budget discussion. He said that the action of continuously attacking the members of the ruling party is against democracy and is objectionable. The members of the ruling party supported the resolution.

But the BJP members said that this resolution was a farce. Raju, who chaired the council, said that time cannot be allowed for the discussion on the resolution, and agendas need to be considered. The opposition members asked for more time for the discussion, but the deputy mayor said that no more time could be allowed, and the resolution presented by Anil was passed.
