HYDERABAD: With monsoon knocking at the door, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has once again put old and dilapidated buildings on its radar.

As part of the GHMC’s monsoon preparedness drive, the civic body conducted a survey and identified 478 dilapidated buildings that are considered uninhabitable and pose a danger to their occupants and those in the surrounding areas.

The GHMC has determined that these structures must either be completely demolished or undergo extensive repairs to ensure the safety of the occupants.

With the monsoon rains approaching, the condition of these buildings is likely to deteriorate further, increasing the risk of collapse and potential loss of life, said officials.

According to GHMC officials, Begumpet area, which falls under the Secunderabad zone, has the highest number of dilapidated structures, with 51 buildings in need of demolition. Malakpet follows closely with 50 such structures, while Goshamahal and Charminar have 31 and 27, respectively.

A significant proportion of these dilapidated buildings are concentrated in the Old City zone, including areas such as Falukmnama, Chandrayangutta and Santosh Nagar. The ageing infrastructure in these areas has resulted in a higher number of dilapidated buildings compared to other areas of the city.

“During the survey, we have made occupants vacate from 40 dilapidated structures, demolished 26 old buildings and ensured that the owners of 36 properties carry out necessary repairs,” said a senior official of the town planning wing.

Earlier, GHMC commissioner Ronald Rose had directed town planning officials to identify dilapidated structures in all 30 circles and take appropriate action.

Accordingly, the officials have issued notices to the building owners to vacate their properties and in some cases, they have been asked to submit structural stability certificates.
