MANGALURU: Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), which is insisting that bulk waste generators comply with rules by setting up on-site composting units on their premises, has fixed a fresh deadline. Accordingly, bulk waste generators, including large apartments, complexes, and business establishments in the city, will have to process the wet waste on-site using composting methods to produce fertiliser by Jan 15, 2025.

The city corporation must ensure that all bulk waste generators adhere to the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, and MCC Solid Waste Treatment Bylaws. Though the city has more than 2,500 bulk waste generators, the majority of them have not yet set up on-site composting units on their premises.

Apartments with more than 30 flats, complexes over 5000 sq. ft., businesses, malls, commercial establishments, places of worship, public sector enterprises, private companies, and various departments within the MCC limits that generate an average of more than 100kg of waste daily are required to segregate their solid waste into three categories – organic, dry, and hazardous. They must process the wet waste on-site using composting methods to produce fertiliser by Jan 15, 2025, stated MCC commissioner Anand CL.

“If large waste producers within the city limits fail to process and dispose of organic waste on-site by the end of Jan 2025, they will face a fine of Rs 15,000 under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, and the Mangaluru City Corporation Solid Waste Management Bylaws, 2019,” the commissioner warned.

For more information, the public can visit the corporation’s website at mangalurucity.mrc.gov.in or send an email to mcchealth2018@gmail.com, the commissioner said.
