MMRDA signs MOU with government of Netherlands for sustainable urban development, ET RealEstate

MUMBAI: Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will utilise Dutch expertise to transform the MMR in terms of integrated waste management, climate resilience and circular economy.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between MMRDA with the Netherland’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management to enforce sustainable urban development in the MMR at the World Economic Forum, Davos 2024.

The joint declaration ensures a five-year partnership that will allow the Dutch expertise and financial contributions. It entails the sharing of best practices in smart city master planning, as well as integrated waste management

Chief minister Eknath Shinde, who is also the chairman of MMRDA said, “This joint declaration with the Netherlands stands as a testament to our understanding, as it will redefine our capacity to tackle a wide range of challenges that are faced in the MMR in terms of handling waste management and climate change.”

Metropolitan commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee said, “Embracing the global best practices in integrated waste management will be a huge leap for the MMR toward sustainability.”

Mr Erwin Nijsse, Director–General for Enterprise and Innovation, Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, Government of Netherlands said, We sincerely hope that our partnership will have a lasting impact on the MMR’s environment through the enforcement of practices that complement climate resilience and sustainable urban development.”*

The knowledge-sharing goals of the MoU will pave the path for MMRDA’s collaboration with potential and active Dutch companies like Sustainable Business Development (SusBDe), Harvest Waste B.V, Technimex, Hydraloop, and Deerns (Healthcare).

Moreover, other Dutch companies involved in landfill gas extraction, such as Afvalzorg, Multriwell, Hofstetter, Indaver, and Enwell, will also majorly contribute to the objectives of knowledge sharing.

Blue Phoenix Group, Royal Haskoning DHV, Rebel Group, BrEAD B.V., and Metasus are Dutch companies associated with Water Processing that will also support the cause. Finally, Water Purification companies like Paques, Nijhuis Industries, Econvert Water & Energy, Colsen, and Colubris Cleantech will share their expertise to support the MMR’s sustainable urban development of the MMR.
