PUNE: The state government is set to constitute a separate monitoring authority for redevelopment projects to ensure the timely completion of projects, housing minister Atul Save recently said.
With most redevelopment projects coming up in cities such as Mumbai, Pune and Thane, the minister said that citizens’ demands would be considered. “A separate regulatory authority will be appointed for monitoring redevelopment projects in the state under the new housing policy, which will be announced in January. This is the need of the hour,” he told TOI.
A separate regulatory authority would help monitor redevelopment projects that would otherwise take years to complete. If these projects are monitored, they would be completed in time, and may even sped up, he said, adding that the authority would be on the lines of MahaRERA, which monitors new constructions.
Chairperson of the Maharashtra Society Welfare Association (MSWA), Ramesh Prabhu, told TOI that having such an authority would definitely be of help.
Last week, TOI had reported that a citizens’ group had written to Save, demanding a proper mechanism for redevelopment projects. The group had urged the state to set up a regulatory authority through a special statute. It had also demanded that the authority should have provisions similar to RERA so that they are not forced to take up issues of delay on the legal front.
The regulatory body should be able to undertake not only the redevelopment of housing societies on private land but also structures that come under government, MHADA, SRA and cessed buildings, the group had said.
